Holy Trinity Square – The Heart of the Buda Castle District

The Holy Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér) is one of the most beautiful and historically rich spots in the Buda Castle District, right in front of the iconic Matthias Church and just steps away from the Fisherman’s Bastion. This elegant square has long been the spiritual and social center of the Castle Hill area, surrounded by remarkable architecture and stories that span centuries of Hungarian history.

At the center of the square stands the Holy Trinity Column, a magnificent Baroque monument erected in 1713 by survivors of the Great Plague of 1691–1709. It was built as an expression of gratitude for the city’s deliverance from the epidemic and to seek protection from future outbreaks. The tall stone column, adorned with angels and crowned by the Holy Trinity, is one of the finest examples of Baroque sculpture in Budapest and a deeply symbolic reminder of faith and resilience.

The square is dominated by the Matthias Church (Mátyás-templom), one of Budapest’s most cherished landmarks. Its colorful tiled roof, Gothic spires, and detailed stonework make it a masterpiece of medieval architecture. Over the centuries, the church has witnessed royal weddings, coronations, and reconstructions — reflecting the changing tides of Hungary’s history.

Next to the square stands the Old Town Hall of Buda, a beautiful example of late Gothic and early Baroque architecture, and nearby, the Fisherman’s Bastion offers panoramic views across the Danube River toward the Hungarian Parliament Building.
