Rising 235 meters above the Danube River, Gellért Hill is one of the most striking natural landmarks in Budapest. This dolomite hill, covered with lush greenery and scenic walking paths, offers some of the best panoramic views of the city. The hill was named after St. Gellért (St. Gerard), a Benedictine monk and Hungary’s first missionary, who played a key role in converting the country to Christianity. According to legend, he was martyred here by pagan rebels in the 11th century — and his dramatic statue, overlooking the river, now marks the spot where he was thrown from the hill.

At the top of Gellért Hill, you’ll find one of Budapest’s most iconic monuments — the Liberty Statue (Szabadság Szobor). This striking bronze sculpture depicts a woman holding a palm leaf high above her head, symbolizing peace and freedom. It was erected in 1947 to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives for Hungary’s independence. Over the decades, it has become a beloved symbol of Budapest, visible from almost anywhere in the city.

The Liberty Statue stands within the Citadel (Citadella), a fortress built by the Habsburgs after the 1848–49 Hungarian Revolution to keep watch over the people of Budapest. Today, the Citadel serves as a peaceful viewpoint rather than a military stronghold, attracting visitors who come to admire the spectacular views of both Buda and Pest, the Danube bridges, and the Parliament Building.

Reaching the summit is easy — you can walk up from the Gellért Baths area in about 15 minutes, or take a leisurely route through the wooded trails of the Gellért Hill Nature Reserve. The climb is rewarded with breathtaking views, especially at sunset when the entire city glows in golden light.
